The ninth installment in the franchise which was originally scheduled to hit the big screen in April 2019 will now move back a year to 10 April 2020 much to the disappointment of fans.
- While the hype for the popular franchise is still strong, Universal Pictures is stalling the release of The Fast and Furious 9.
Nevertheless, the new release date will once again put the movie at the Easter weekend, where the series generally makes a lot of money.
Reports suggest that Furious 7 and Fate Of The Furious hold the second and third place records for all-time Easter weekend box office openings — losing only to Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.
In other words, the new release date for The Fast and Furious 9 should be another huge payday for Universal.
Since its debut, the franchise has earned $1.76 billion domestically and more than $5.13 billion worldwide.
This year’s installment, The Fate of the Furious, added a huge chunk to that total with over $224 million made domestically and more than $1.23 billion worldwide.
On the plus side, With the release date of the latest installment nailed down, the studio can now start focusing on making another masterpiece.
- So far, no director has been announced and it’s still unclear if F. Gary Gray will return behind the wheel though his schedule seems to be clear.
For the most part, fans can expect the franchise favourites like Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Ludacris to reprise their roles. However, while no casting has been confirmed at this point it’s not quite clear if Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will continue in their supporting roles. Also, a 10th instalment which was previously announced and scheduled for April 2021 might be shifted to a future date as well.
